Cheshire Cat Shawl
🇬🇧 Everyone knows it, everyone has it – this one beautiful, hand dyed skein of yarn. It varies in colors, it has speckles or both, it waits for that one, special project, which somehow doesn’t come. This yarn is just too special to fit into larger projects. It has too many variations in itself, so that any structural or contrasting pattern just gets lost.
I had the hand dyed 100% merino yarn from GarnStories in the color “Echo” as “left-over” yarn from the Westknits MKAL. The name of the yarn says it all. The shawl was originally supposed to have the same name as the yarn. “Mistuned Harmonics” was an alternative name. Finally, I named the shawl “Cheshire Cat”, because the stripes reminded me of a tabby cat in general and the colors reminded me of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland in particular.
For the shawl I chose a very simple, stockinette design. I wanted to see every single detail of the coloring of the yarn. I deliberately avoided elaborate texture or lace patterns, even on the edge of the shawl. The shawl is knitted sideways along the long edge from one side tip over the middle to the opposite side tip. Through one-sided increases and decreases the third point of the triangle is formed downwards. This also causes the rows to have different lengths. Therefore, color repetitions in the yarn will appear differently from row to row. Stripes and Pooling effects change all over the shawl.
The upper edge of the shawl is knitted as a fake brioche. The fake brioche is knitted similar to a knit-purl ribbing. While the knit-purl ribbing alternates knitted and purled stitches, in the fake brioche slipped stitches are alternated with purled stitches. In the back rows, the slipped stitches are knitted in the same way as in the normal ribbing. This looks good, makes the edge firm, and lies nice and soft against the neck! At the bottom edge six stitches are worked in garter stitch to avoid too much curling of the finished shawl.

Es variiert in Farben, es hat Sprenkel oder beides, es strahlt einen an, es wartet für dieses eine, besondere Projekt, welches dann irgendwie nicht kommt. Das Garn ist einfach zu besonders, um sich in größere Projekte einzufügen. Es hat in sich zu viele Variationen, so dass jedes Struktur- oder Kontrastmuster einfach unter geht.
Ich hatte das handgefärbte 100% Merinogarn von GarnStories in der Farbe „Echo“. Der Name des Garns sagt eigentlich schon alles. Das Tuch sollte daher ursprünglich den gleichen Namen wie das Garn erhalten. „Mistuned Harmonics“ war eine Namensalternative. Letztendlich habe ich das Tuch „Cheshire Cat“ genannt, da mich die Streifen an eine getigerte Katze und die Farben an die Grinsekatze aus Alice im Wunderland erinnert haben.
Für das Tuch wurde ein sehr schlichtes, glatt rechts gestricktes Design gewählt. Auf aufwändige Struktur- oder Lacemuster, auch am Rand des Tuchs wurde ganz bewusst verzichtet. Das Tuch wird seitwärts entlang der langen Kante von einer Spitze über die Mitte zur gegenüberliegenden Spitze gestrickt. Durch einseitige Zunahmen und Abnahmen formt sich nach unten die dritte Spitze des Dreiecks. Aus dem gleichen Grunde sind die Reihen unterschiedlich lang. Farbwiederholungen im Garn erscheinen von Reihe zu Reihe unterschiedlich. Streifen und Pooling-Effekte des Tuches ändern sich über die Länge.
Die obere Kante des Tuchs wird als falsches Patent gestrickt. Das falsche Patent wird ähnlich wie eine Rechts-Links-Rippe gestrickt. Während sich, bei der Rechts-Links-Rippe rechte und linke Maschen abwechseln, wechseln sich im falschen Patent in den Hinreihen Hebemaschen mit linken Maschen ab. In den Rückreihen werden die Hebemaschen wie in der normalen Rippe gestrickt. Das sieht gut aus, macht die Kante griffig und liegt schön weich am Hals! An der unteren Kante werden sechs Maschen kraus rechts gestrickt, um zu starkes Einrollen zu vermeiden. Achtung: Da das Tuch glatt rechts gestrickt wird, wird das fertige Tuch auch nach dem Waschen und Blocken immer die Tendenz haben, sich ein wenig einzurollen. Wer das nicht mag, sollte das evtl. kraus rechts stricken. Ich persönlich finde das Rollen der Tuchenden gar nicht so schlimm (und verstärkt den Katzenschwanzeffekt). Mir war viel wichtiger, dass ich glatt rechts gestrickt die Färbung noch besser sehen kann, als bei einem doch ein wenig unruhigerem, kraus rechts gestricktem Tuch.
