Dyeing Process

Every skein of Heathland Knits’ yarn is dyed by hand. Depending of the final color the yarn is either kettle dyed for solid or semi solid colors, or hand painted for all variegated and speckled colors. This implies that each skein is unique in itself. Two skeins of one color will therefore always vary slightly. Please read the yarn info page for how to best knit / crochet a hand-dyed yarn.

We are using acid dyes, which are not toxic. Acid dye is not meaning that the dye itself is acidic. Rather, an acidic medium is needed to fix the color on the yarn.

After dyeing, each skein is washed by hand with an alkaline detergent to remove dye residue and neutralize the acid. Then the yarn is rinsed with clear water to remove residues of the detergent.

If the weather allows, the strands may dry outside in the wind.

The following video gives an insight into the dyeing processes. It is showing how DK weight mini skeins are dyed with variegated colors, and how much work and attention to detail goes into every skein of yarn.
